Project Description

The project involved the construction of a bentonite cement slurry wall along the alignment of the existing dike for Lake Okeechobee in western Palm Beach County.  The slurry wall will reduce water seepage through the dike and increase the dike’s stability to safety levels acceptable in today’s engineering requirements.

To perform the scope of work, Bauer Foundation Corporation, (Bauer) the project’s prime contractor, subcontracted VCM to provide construction services for the project.  VCM’s status as a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) and HubZone Contractor allowed Bauer to utilize the value VCM’s subcontract in their Small Business Plan to the USACE.

Work performed included:

  • Installation and maintenance of silt fence and erosion control devices
  • Stripping and stockpiling of topsoil
  • Furnishing and installing working platform embankment
  • Removing and replacing the working platform embankment as the project progressed
  • Removal and offsite disposal of the final working platform
  • Re-grading/shaping of existing dike
  • Removal of topsoil from stockpiles and placement along areas for turf establishment
  • Mowing and maintenance of turf
  • Resurfacing of existing roadway along the dike’s alignment with FDOT aggregate base course
  • Removal of silt fence and other erosion control devices

All work met the USACE project specifications and was completed within the allotted schedule.
